Hello reader’s in this post we are going to talk about the grapple 5e. This is very intresting topic, their ability scores, size and speed are so fantastic.
This post we have briefly discuss their The Grappled Condition, Escaping a Grapple, and Actions Whilst Grappling.
This guide covers how grapple works when it should ve used and why you should do it more often.
The rules for using a Grapple are found in the Players Handbook on pages 195.
When you want to grab a creature or wrestle with it, you can use the Attack action to make a Special Melee Attack, a grapple.
If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.
The target of your grapple must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach.
Usinh at least one free hand, you try to seize the target by making a grapple check instead of an Attcak roll: A Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use).
You succeed automatically if the target in Incapacitated. If you succeed, you subject the target to the Grappled condition.
The condition specifies the things that end it, and you can release the target whenever you like (no action required).
The rules for grappling clearly define this as a special attack that is part of the attack action.
It replaces one of the attacks you can make (provided you can make more than one), not the whole action.
It is possible for a fighter with two attacks to grapples an enemy and then stab them with a weapon.
What Happen In The Grappled Condition:
A grappled creature’s speed becomes 0, and it can’t benefit from any bonus to its speed. The condition ends if the Grappler is incapacitated.
The condition also ends if an effect removes the grappled creature from the reach of the Grappler or Grappling Effect, such as when a creature is hurled away by is the Thunderwave spell.
Note this point:
If you can make two attack or more with the attack action, you can grapple a creature and then make a shove attack to knock it prone.
A grappled creature has a speed of 0, so it can’t get up, and melee attacks against a prone creatures are at advantages.
Escaping a Grapple
A grappled creature can use its action to escape. To do so, it must succeed on a Strenth (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check constested by your Strength (Athletics) check.
Moving a Grappled Creature
When you move, you can drag or carry the grappled creature with you, but your speed is halved unless the creature is two or more sizes smaller than you.
What is the Point of Grappling?
Grappling itself does not do any damage but can be a useful tactical asset. When a creature is grappled, they are under the grappled condition.
Their speed is 0. It takes a full action to attempt to break free of a grapple. So, when you tie up that enemy caster or warrier, they have a decision to make.
A failed escape attempt still take their action. This can allow you to get a free round even if they manage to escape.
You can also use grapple to move creatures and prevent them from moving. A grappled creature’s speed becomes 0, so the villain that tries to escape with the loot doesn’t get far.
It could also be handy to put creatures in a cage or prisoners in a cell if they are less than cooperative.
Grapple, according to rules as written and confirmed by Sage Advice, cannot be used as an attack of opportunity. It is a widely accepted house rule to allow it, though, so it may be worth it to confirm with the DM.
Bottom line:
Grapple has many uses. It is a special attack that anyone can use. Reducing the speed of the target to 0 has it tactical advantages but should be used with wisdom. A grappled creatures can still attack and cast spells.
Breaking a Grapple With Magic
The grappled condition states, “The condition also ends if an effect removes the grappled creatures from the reach of the grappler or grappling effect, such as when a creature is hurled away by the Thunderwave spell.”
The grappled individual casts Thunderwave. The grappler fails the constitution check and is pushed 10 feet away breaking the grapple.
This can create an intresting scenario when a 3rd party gets involved, however.
There is a grappler and a grapplee. A caster approaches within 5 feet of the pair and casts Thunderwave.
The grappler passes the constitution save, so he stays put. The grapplee fails the constitution save, so he gets pushed 10 feet away from the caster and the grappler. Right? Technically yes.
The grapplee is moved out of the range of the grappler per the spell. This means the grapple condition is lost.
Actions Whilst Grappling
Whilst grappling a creature you may make one of the following special attacks against that creature.
If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.
Pin: You attempt to pin a creature grappled by you to the ground, or other solid object.
Make a grapple check, if you succeed, you and the creature are both restrained and prone until the grapple ends.
Silence: Covering the creature’s mouth, you try to stop it from making any noise.
Make a grapple check. If you succeed, the creature suffers the silence effect until you next turn.
Pound: Make an unarmed attack, or an attack with a light weapon, with advantage
Moving a Grappled Creature: When you move, you can drag or carry the grappled creature with you, but your speed is halved, unless the creatures is two or more sizes smaller than you.
Throw Prone: You attempt to throw a creature grappled by you to the ground. Make a grapple check, if you succeed, the creature is no longer grappled, but is knocked prone.
Disarm: Target an item held by the grappled creature, and make a grapple check. If you succeed, the defender drops the item.
You have disadvantage if the defender is holding the item with two or more hands. The target has advantage if it is larger than you, or disadvantages if it is smaller.
Additionally, allies can attempt to subdue an enemy creature that you are grappling:
Subdue: Whist grappled an ally can attempt to subdue the target using ropes/manacles.
The friendly creature uses their action to makr a grapple check to inflict the incapacitated effect on the target.
Whilst incapacitated this way, a creature may attempt to break the equipment subduring them but may take no other actions or reactions.
This effect lasts until another creature frees the subdued creatures, or they break the equipment used.
