Darkness 5e | Spell Guide for D&D 5th Edition

The Darkness spell is one of the strongest spells in DND. This is a second-level evocation spell. Casting this spell requires one action, and its range is 60 feet. It can be cast by warlocks, wizards, and sorcerers.

2nd Level Evocation

Casting Time: 1 action
Components: V, M
Material: Bat fur and a drop of pitch or piece of coal
Range: 60 feet
Spell List: Sorcerer, Warlock & Wizard
Concentration: Yes
Duration: Up to 10 minutes

Magical darkness spreads from a point you choose within range to fill a 15 foot radius Sphare for the Duration.

The darkness spreads around corners. A creature with Darkvision can’t see through this darkness, and nonmagical light can’t illuminate it.

If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn’t being worn or carried, the darkness emanates from the object and moves with it.

Completely covering the source of the darkness with an opaque object, such as a bowl or a helm, blocks the darkness.

If any of this spell’s area overlaps with an area of light created by a spell of 2nd Level or lower, the spell that created the light is dispelled.

Frequently Asked Question of Darkness

Darkness is an amazing spell, but many people are confused by it, and so they ask some questions. Here are the answers to those questions;

1. How Does Darkness Work In DND?

Darkness fills a 15-foot radius sphere from a point you select within the range from which you choose.

It spreads around the corners of the sphere. Darkvision cannot see through the darkness, and nonmagical light cannot illuminate the darkness either.

2. Can You See Outside of Darkness 5e?

It is important to note that Natural Darkness does not completely block vision. You can see even very far away illuminated areas in natural darkness. According to the PHB, darkness creates an area that is heavily obscured.

3. Can You Cast Darkness At A Higher Level?

No. A darkness spell can only dispel a light-creating spell of 2nd level or lower, regardless of the spell slot in which it was used.

4. What Is The Point of Darkness 5e?

You can use darkness to protect yourself and your friends from opportunity attacks, counterspells, and the majority of spells and abilities that target you.

The fact that it can be cast on any object allows you to move it or temporarily turn it off.

5. Can You Cast Darkness On An Enemy?

The darkness can be thrown either at a particular point in space, in which case it remains static, or at an object, which you are holding or not holding or carrying, in which case it moves with the object.

Hence, it will not be possible to target the giant’s nose, or even his glasses, and make them move with the giant.
